Aluminium is produced synthetically by nuclear fusion. Highly charged positive ions of the isotope <15>N are accelerated, by passage through a cyclotron, onto a target of positive <12>C ions with sufficient energy to cause fusion of the nuclei to form an atom of <27>Al. Also claimed is a method of producing platinum through a series of nuclear fusions forming <32>Al, <33>Al and then successively <65>Fe, <130>Te and finally <195>Pt.
