<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine equipped with a variable compression ratio mechanism for varying compression ratio by changing the volume of a combustion chamber, wherein disturbance of an air-fuel ratio accompanying the change in the volume of a combustion chamber can be suppressed. <P>SOLUTION: The actual volume of a combustion chamber achieved by a variable compression ratio mechanism 6 is detected by a combustion chamber volume detecting means 42.
