PURPOSE:To improve holding characteristics and to prevent crosstalk from being generated by inverting the potential of a counter electrode for sandwiching liquid crystal in opposite-phase relation with the inversion period of a video signal in each vertical or horizontal scanning period and also inverting the potential at the time of nonselection of a scanning line in in-phase relation with the inversion period. CONSTITUTION:The gate voltage at the time of nonselection in one horizontal scanning period is varied to the same level with the common potential VCOM of a counter substrate 46 in in-phase relation, the level of the gate electrode when the common potential VCOM is inverted to a high level is raised, and the voltage VGS between the gate and source of a TFT 43 is lowered. A drain current which flows when the TFT 43 is OFF is smaller and smaller as the gate voltage which becomes a reverse bias voltage is lower and lower, and the impedance is held high. Consequently, the holding characteristics of the TFT 43 are improved and even when a relatively large OFF current flows to the TFT 43, the crosstalk is prevented from being generated.
