A folding machine for cardboard blanks where it is required to fold a flap, which is at one end of a side panel of a blank, down on to or under the remainder of the blank with the fold line transverse to the direction of movement of the blank, comprises conveyer means engaging a central portion of the blank, folding means for raising or depressing the flap, and a rotary member conveying at least one arm which, during passage of the blank, bears on the blank near the fold line and accompanies it during folding. Fig. 3 illustrates conveyer means 8 gripping a blank 1, with a central flap 21 already folded, and a flap 4 near the edge of the blank being folded by lever 11. A rod 13 mounted on the frame of the machine (not shown) mounts a block 14 with a bearing for a rotary member having two arms 15, 16 which are rotated in an inclined plane by drive spindle 18, or preferably by a flexible transmission element so that the position of the rod 13 can be adjusted to suit blanks of different dimensions. Each arm 15, 16 is formed of elastically deformable material to exert a pressure on the region 111 near to flap 4, and thus prevent deformation of that region during folding. The passage of the blanks, the folding operation and the application of pressure by arms 15, 16 is suitably synchronized, and there may be two rotary members one on each edge of the blank (in the case where two flaps are folded simultaneously) connected by a flexible drive element 19.
