Textile materials are provided with a resilient non-slip backing by applying an aqueous foamed dispersion of latex and/or a synthetic resin to one surface of the textile, making the layer thus formed uniform in depth and subjecting it to a gelling treatment, passing the coated material between two unheated pressure rollers, the one in contact with the gelled foam bearing an embossed pattern on its surface and the other having a smooth but resilient surface, so that the gelled layer is stamped with a pattern and the coated material is finally cured or dried at an elevated temperature. The textile material may be a tufted carpet or a net-like structure of fibrous yarns and the foam may be a pure natural latex, a synthetic latex or a mixture of latex with a synthetic latex and a synthetic resin dispersion. Suitable synthetic resins include polyvinyl compounds, polyurethanes and polyacrylic acid esters and a preferred foam material is a mixture of latex with polyvinyl acetate. |
