Blue-fluorescent 4-[pyrazolyl-(1)]-naphthalimides of formula wherein R1 is hydrogen, a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical with 1-4 carbon atoms or an araliphatic hydrocarbon radical, which hydrocarbon radicals may be substituted, by one or more hydroxyl groups, esterified or etherified hydroxyl groups, amino groups, cyano groups, acyl groups, carbalkoxy groups or pyrrolidonyl groups, and wherein R2, R3 and R4 are hydrogen or a C1-C4 aliphatic hydrocarbon are prepared by diazotizing a suitable 4-amino-naphthalimide and reducing the diazonium salt to the 4-hydrazino-naphthalimide which is then reacted with an appropriate b -dicarbonyl compound, e.g. malonic dialdehyde, 3-ketobutyraldehyde or acetylacetone, at temperatures of about 100 DEG C. and in organic solvents which are free from keto groups, to give the desired product. The examples describe the preparation of N-methyl-4-[3-methyl-pyrazolyl-(1)] - naphthalimide, N - methyl - 4 - [pyrazolyl - (1)] - naphthalimide and N-methyl-4 - [3,3 - dimethyl - pyrazolyl - (1)] - naphthalimide. Many others are listed.ALSO:Synthetic materials made of or containing, e.g. polyamides, polyacrylonitrile, polyesters, polyvinyl chloride or cellulose acetate and in the form of fibres, filaments, fabrics, foils or plastic masses are brightened by blue-fluorescent 4-[pyrazolyl-(1)]-naphthalimides of formula wherein R1 is hydrogen or a C1- 4 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or an araliphatic hydrocarbon radical which radicals may be substituted by one or more hydroxyl, esterified or etherified hydroxyl, amino, nitrilo, acyl, carbalkoxy or pyrrolidonyl groups and R2, R3 and R4 are hydrogen or C1-C4 aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals. The agents can be applied, e.g., in the form of aqueous dispersions or of solutions in organic solvents, or they can be applied in combination with detergents, or added to casting masses serving for the production of foils or filaments. Example 4 describes a composition containing: polyvinyl chloride, dioctyl phthalate, or organic tin compound, titanium dioxide and a 4-[3-methyl-pyrazolyl-(1)]-naphthalimide.ALSO:Synthetic fabrics made of or containing polyamides, polyacrylonitrile, polyesters, polyvinyl chloride and cellulose actetate, are brightened by means of compounds having the formula: wherein R1 is hydrogen or a C1-4 aliphatic hydrocarbon group or an araliphatic hydrocarbon group. Which radicals may be substituted by one or more hydroxyl, esterified or etherified hydroxyl, amino, nitrolo, acyl, carbalkoxy or pyrrolidonyl groups and R2, R3 and R4 are C1-4 aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals or hydrogen. The brightening agents may be applied for example in the form of aqueous dispersions or of solutions in organic solvents. The examples describe the treatment of fabrics made from polyester, polyacrylonitrile and cellulose acetate fibres.
