[Also in Divisions F1 and G3] An apparatus for treating exhaust gases of an I.C. engine (see Division F1) includes a valve unit 38, Fig. 1, having a flap valve (185), Fig. 7 (not shown), spring-biased towards a conduit 181 but normally held by a diaphragm 192 in a position in which it closes a conduit 182. The diaphragm is normally communicated with a vacuum reservoir 207 via a pipe 194, a temperature-responsive valve 39 and a pipe 206. However, excessive temperatures sensed by probe 224 cause a spring-biased pivoted lever 213 of the valve 39 to close the associated end of the pipe 206 and open the associated end of a compressed air supply pipe 141, which causes the diaphragm to move the flap valve to a position in which it closes conduit 181 and opens conduit 182. A temperature-responsive valve 37 operates in a similar manner to the valve 39 to open or close the associated end of a single pipe 160. A valve 36, Figs. 1, and 4, selects which of two vacuum sources communicated thereto through pipes 96, 99 is to be communicated with a pipe 78. When the vacuum communicated through pipe 96 is of sufficient value, a diaphragm 84 and a connected valve member 93 move leftwards (as viewed in Fig. 4) to communicate the pipe 78 with pipe 96 and prevent communication between pipes 78 and 99. Fall in vacuum communicated through pipe 96 results in the diaphragm and valve member moving to the position shown to communicate the pipe 78 with the alternative vacuum source via pipe 99. A spring-biased check valve 104 is provided. The engine air cleaner 24 has a conical intake nozzle 115 supported for longitudinal movement along guides (117, 118), Fig. 5 (not shown), in the bowl portion of the cleaner. When air flow through the nozzle exceeds, e.g. 50 cu. feet per min., the air pressure on the forward lip of the nozzle forces the conical nozzle longitudinally further into the bowl portion to create an annular additional air opening between the nozzle and the aperture (120) through which the nozzle extends into the bowl portion. The nozzle has a number of angularly-spaced fins (119) on the outer surface thereof which co-operate with the aperture to maintain concentricity of the nozzle therewith.
