Enol halides corresponding to the skeletal formula <FORM:0981523/C2/1> in which R and R2, which may be the same or different, represent halogen atoms, are prepared by reacting a compound corresponding to the skeletal formula <FORM:0981523/C2/2> in which R1 represents an ether or thioether group and R2 represents a halogen atom, in the presence of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal halide with a halogenating agent serving to convert a carboxyl group into an acid halide group. The halogenating agent may be phosphorus oxychloride and the metal halide may be lithium or magnesium chloride. Specifications 981,521 and 981,522 are referred to. |
