[Also in Division C3] Unsaturated betaines of the formula are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula with a sulphonamide of the formula in the above formulae R is H or methyl, X is R 1 and R 2 are the same or different alkyl, R 3 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or aryl, R 4 is H or alkyl, n is an integer from 1-6, and Hal is chlorine, bromine or iodine. The preparation of the betaine (R, R 1 and R 2 = CH 3 , X = -O-, R3 = phenyl and n = 2) is illustrated wherein 0À4 mol of 2-dimethyl amino ethyl methacrylate is reacted with 0À2 mol of N-(chloroacetyl) - benzenesulphonamide by heating in acetonitrile in the presence of t - butyl - pyrocatechol and phenothiazine. Alternative amino and sulphonamido reactants are listed. The betaines are used in the preparation of dyeable acrylonitrile polymers (see Division C3). |
