Chlorinated ethylene polymers are prepared by chlorinating an ethylene polymer having a molecular non-uniformity of 5 or less and a relative specific viscosity of 0À7 to 10 measured as 0À1% solution in decahydronaphthalene, at 60‹ to 150‹ C. in a chlorine resistant solvent. Polymers of the required uniformity may be obtained by thermal, thermomechanical or oxidative degradation, or by molecular weight control during polymerization, of polymers of ethylene and optionally up to 10 weight per cent of a C 3-6 α-olefin. Specified solvents are carbon tetracnloride, chloroform, methylene chloride and chlorobenzene. optionally in admixture with water. Chlorination may be effected in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide and azodiisobutyronitrile; and in anhydrous media in the presence of sulphur dioxide to introduce sulphochloride groups. The products may be used as plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride.
