1,210,107. Cathode-ray tubes. MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. 21 Nov., 1968 [28 Nov., 1967 (4)], No. 55287/68. Heading H1D. A cathode-ray display tube of the type wherein arrays of orthogonal strip electrodes 17 and 18 disposed on opposite sides of a glass support 16 provided with apertures 19 are energized sequentially to allow electrons to pass through the aperture 19 intersected by the energized electrodes to a fluorescent screen 12, is characterized in that the electron source is the plasma 23 produced by a discharge between electrodes 21 and 22, the plasma being separated from the control system 16-18 by a mesh or grid 20 which is maintained at a negative potential relative to electrodes 21 and 22. Preferably the cathode 21 is thermionic and the filling is an inert gas at a pressure of 10<SP>-2</SP>mm. The strip electrodes 17 and 18 are provided with apertures corresponding to apertures 19 but of slightly smaller diameter and may extend into the apertures 19; they are negatively biased by sources 26 and 27 and may be energized by pulses applied to terminals such as 30 and 31, the intensity of the spot on the luminescent screen depending on the amplitude of the pulses. The tube is suitable for television display or for displaying letters or numbers. |
