Crinkly shreds of tobacco are produced by directing towards each other two portions of a tobacco sheet by bending said sheet to cause said portions to face each other and cutting said sheet obliquely across and in relation to the bending axis whereby the major portion of said shreds when unbent have the same extent as that of the unbent tobacco sheet. The bending may be into a U or an O, concertinawise or into a roll. In the embodiment shown, a tobacco strip B is fed by conveyers 1 and 2 on to the surface of a revolving cylinder having a suction surface over angle E. A blade 4 operated by cam 6 with lobe 7 pushes the strip B so as to fold it between conveyers 8 and 9 which feed it to cutting rolls 12 and 13 carrying inter-penetrating peripheral cutting ribs which may be circular, in which case strip B is fed obliquely thereto, or screw-threads.</p> |
