[Also in Divisions B2, B5 and C3] A resinous layer having an embossed surface is produced by applying a composition containing a blowing agent to portions of the surface of the layer of resinous composition containing an accelerator which substantially lowers the decomposition temperature of the blowing agent, the agent being soluble in at least one component of the composition, allowing a portion of the agent on the surface of the layer to migrate into the layer and contact the accelerator, heating the layer to decompose the agent thereby forming raised areas on the surface which correspond to the areas of application of the agent, and thereafter cooling the product formed. The resinous composition may be heated after migration of the blowing agent to decompose the portion of the agent within the composition without decomposing the portion of the agent remaining on the surface of composition. The resinous layer may be heated to at least partially gel the composition prior to application of the agent. The agent may be applied to a base, e.g. a transfer sheet, and the resinous composition applied thereover. The agent may be printed on the surface of the layer utilizing printing apparatus in the form of an ink composition containing the agent. A second resinous composition which may be transparent or translucent may be applied, e.g. by spraying or by laminating a film, over the layer prior to heating to decompose the agent. The accelerators may be a metal salt, examples of which are given. The backing web may be formed of a resinous composition, e.g. butadienestyrene, polymerized chloroprene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, or vinyl chloridevinyl acetate copolymer; felted sheet; woven or knitted fabric of cotton, wool, asbestos, and synthetic fibres; or release paper. The resinous composition containing an accelerator may be of homo-, co-, or ter-polymers of vinyl chloride, with vinyl esters, e.g. acetate, chloroacetate, butyrate; vinyl bromide; vinyl alkyl sulphonates, vinyl ethers such as vinyl ethyl ether, isopropyl ether or chlorethyl ether; cyclic unsaturated compounds such as styrene, mono- and poly-chlorostyrenes; coumarone; indene; vinyl naphthalenes; vinyl pyridines and pyrrole; acrylic acid and derivatives such as ethyl acrylate or chloroacrylate, methyl or ethyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile; vinylidene chloride, bromide or fluoro chloride; unsaturated hydrocarbons such as ethylene, propylene, isobutene, trichloroethylene; alkyl compounds such as alkyl acetate, chloride, or ethyl ether; conjugated and crossconjugated ethylenically unsaturated compounds such as butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene, and 2,3-dimethylbutadiene-1,3-piperylene; diethyl fumarate and divinyl butone; neoprene; SBR and nitrile; polyurethane; polyamides; phenolics; urea-formaldehyde; cellulose esters; epoxy and silicones. |
