PURPOSE:To allow stable driving with high luminance without discharge delay by adding a halftone pulse to a scanning electrode signal so that discharge is executed at least once in one scanning even with non-selected cells. CONSTITUTION:A lighting signal is applied on the data side of the cells (m,n) in an address pulse period and, therefore, the amplitude is large and the discharge is generated in the address pulse period. The discharge is sustained even if the amplitude is diminished in the next hold pulse period when the discharge is generated. The hold pulse stops upon starting of the next horizontal synchronizing pulse and, therefore, the discharge stops as well, but the discharge is made once at the time of rise and fall of the halftone pulse. A putting out signal is applied to the data side of the cells (m+1, n) in the address pulse period and, therefore, the amplitude is small and the discharge is not generated in the address pulse period. The discharge is made once at the rise and fall of the halftone pulse upon starting of the next horizontal synchronizing period. The failure of the cells in discharging by the discharge delay or such decrease as to cause flickering is suppressed in this way. |
