Hydraulic actuating means for the spring-returned admission valve of a reciprocating expansion motor comprises a plunger pump delivering oil under pressure to a slave cylinder the piston of which is connected to said admission valve, an automatic non-return filling valve for said pump and controllable means for spilling oil displaced by the pump at any desired point in the delivery stroke of the pump plunger thereby determining the period of opening of said admission valve.
