The chemical modification may be esterification or etherification e.g. acetylation, allylation and cyanoethylation. Bifunctional modifying agents may be employed e.g. asymmetrical di- or poly-vinylsulphones and cyanuric chloride. Fabrics which have been partially esterified may be treated with dilute alkali metal hydroxide before dyeing or printing to reduce the degree of esterification. Blends of polyester and cellulose may be treated by the process of invention.
