A process for the processing of sludge, in which the latter is first concentrated mechanically in a vibratory container (1) and is then calcined in a fluidized bed furnace (4). The device for implementation of the process described in the invention consists essentially of a settling tank with an overflow into which projects a vibrator immersed in the sludge, separating the solid from the liquid phase. The vibrator used is a disc-type column composed of a vertical hollow support and vibratory discs secured thereto. The container is designed as a double-packeted container and possesses an inlet and an outlet for the circulation of a heating medium. Located below the clarification region is a perforated or mesh-type plate which partitions off, in the settling tank, a flow area, which is provided with a connection for the introduction of the hot gas or hot air. In another design, the vibrator consists of a register comprising plate elements which are arranged parallel to one another, and are connected on their upper side with the vibration generator, and whose lower ends projects freely, and are bent in the direction of the throughput.
