PURPOSE:To automatically set an optimal and max. rolling speed without sacrificing the plate thickness accuracy by calculating a max. plate thickness changing speed based on a deviation signal between a set thickness and an actually measured thickness and setting a rolling speed based on the above max. rolling speed and an allowable max. rolling speed. CONSTITUTION:A rolled stock 1 is passed between a couple of upper and lower rolls 3 to be rolled to have a prescribed thickness. An actual thickness of the stock 1 before rolling is measured by an inlet side thickness gage 11 and the measurement signal is inputted to a speed controller 7. A deviation signal between the actual thickness signal and a target thickness signal set by a thickness setter 12 is calculated by the controller 7 to differentiate the deviation signal to find a deviation speed, that is, a thickness changing speed and to calculate max. thickness changing speed V. Based on quantitative comparison between the max. speed V and another max. speed V1 allowed by operational members, automatic setting of an optimum and max. rolling speed is performed and a motor 5 is controlled.
