Prodn. of a hormone extract by extracting duodenum freshly removed from slaughtered animals (e.g pigs) with dilute hydrochloric acid. The crude extract thus obtained may be purified to give a therapeutically useful product, e.g secretin or pancreozymin. Both secretin and pancreozymin are of therapeutic interest, but they are chiefly used in research into pancreas function.
