[Also in Divisions B6 and G6] In the detection of nuclear particle radiation by a method employing the selective etching of the radiation-damaged portions of a radiation sensitive material, the material is first etched with a basic aqueous solution containing a swelling agent for the sensitive material, whereby the basic solution is permitted to attack the damaged portions more deeply. Preferably, the material is thereafter treated with a second basic aqueous solution containing a solvent for the material to repolish the undamaged surface portions, and thus both permit the radiation dose to be estimated by a photometric rather than a track-counting technique and also allow the use of a wider range of materials for the detector e.g. cellulose nitrate having a high content of plasticizing camphor. The radiationsensitive material may be cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate-nitrate cellulose acetate-butyrate, or poly(ethleneglycol terephthalate); the swelling agent may be an alkali metal halide or thiocyanate, and the polishing agent may be ethyleneglycol or ethanol. The basic solution containing the swelling agent is caustic potash or caustic soda. |
