The invention comprises 1,2-diphenyl-2-propionyloxy - 3 - (dimethylaminomethyl) - 3-butene; acid addition salts thereof; and their preparation by propionylating 1,2-diphenyl-3-(dimethylaminomethyl)-3-buten-2-ol or a salt thereof, e.g. an O-alkali metal or O-magnesium halide salt, and, if desired, converting a resulting-acid addition salt into the free base or converting the resulting free base into an acid addition salt. 1,2 - Diphenyl - 3 - (dimethylaminomethyl) - 3-buten-2-ol is prepared by reacting 2,3-dibromopropene with dimethylamine to form N,N - dimethyl-2-bromoallylamine, treating this compound with magnesium to form the corresponding Grignard compound, reacting this compound with desoxybenzoin and decomposing the resulting complex. Pharmaceutical compositions having analgesic and antitussive activity, for oral, parenteral or topical administration, comprise a compound of the invention together with a pharmaceutical carrier. |
