An elastomeric copolymer of one or more olefins with a cycloalkylidene cyclopentadiene is made by copolymerizing the monomers in the presence of a catalyst comprising an organometallic compound of one or more metals of Group I, II, or III of the Periodic Table and a halogenated compound of a transition metal selected from Group IV, V, or VI. The copolymerization is preferably effected in a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon diluent and the catalyst may be formed in situ or preformed and " aged." The olefin may be ethylene and/or propylene. The cycloalkylidene radical may be cyclopropylidene, cyclopentylidene, or cyclohexylidene. Terpolymers, soluble in boiling heptane are exemplified. The terpolymers are vulcanized with a mix consisting of carbon black, ZnO, sulphur, mercaptobenzthiazole, and tetramethylthiuram disulphide. |
