A pulse control system for a series-wound D.C. motor having reversing contactors 1, 2, for reversing the connections of the motor field winding E-F to the motor armature A-B, includes diodes D1 and D2 arranged so that one of the diodes is connected across both the field winding and armature to act as a freewheeling diode and the other diode is connected across the armature to act as a plugging diode when the system is operatively connected to the motor, irrespective of the direction of the connections of the field winding to the armature. A thyristor Th controlled by an amplifier V provides the pulse train, the pulse repetition frequency being controlled by a potentiometer 3 operable by the driving pedal of a light vehicle in which the motor is fitted, the D.C. source being a battery G1. Resistors R1, R2 in association with a diode D3 and a capacitor C constitute a filter element limiting the pulse rate during regenerative braking a transistor Tr providing the input for amplifier V. The voltage across filter element D3-R1-R2-C is then the forward voltage of that diode D1 or D2 connected across the armature. Alternatively, the filter element is connected to the terminals of a measuring resistor (not shown) in the motor circuit, the voltage across this resistor being proportional to armature voltage. The motor is braked until it stops and can then be made to build up speed in the reverse direction in conventional manner. To start regenerative braking contactor 2 is first changed over to its dotted line position and the contactor 1 is changed to its dotted line position.</p>
