Continuous reduction of iron oxide to sponge iron is performed by reaction of pre-heated iron oxide with pre-heated reducing gas for a period of time sufficient to result in a min 90% reduction of the oxide. The temp to which the iron oxide and the reducing gas are preheated lies between the sooting temp of the gas and the softening temp of the iron oxide. The oxide is pref. pelletised prior to introduction into the vertical shaft kiln, in which the reduction is carried out. In the kiln the oxide is charged from the top and the gas introduced near the bottom from the sides.
|
