<p>Fast and uniform hardening of surfaces such as the running tracks of ball races can be achieved by rotating the race fast relative to an electron beam focused on its surface. If the beam is stationary, it is shaped to impinge on the track along an axial line or ellipse. If the base is a narrow pencil beam, it is oscillated by a deflector system at right angles to the direction of motion.</p> |
