[Also in Division B1] Formamides are produced by means of a jet pump in which carbon monoxide is the inducing fluid and the recirculated reaction liquid is supplied to the pump and a pressure at a rate at least 50 per cent greater than it would be induced at atmospheric pressure by the jet of gas alone. In examples the reaction liquid is dimethylamine and a methanol solution of sodium methylate, part of the reaction product being cooled and recirculated, a yield of over 99 per cent dimethylformamide based on the amount of dimethylamine used being obtained over a period of 20 days. The carbon monoxide recovered from the reaction may also be recirculated to the jet pumps. |
