PRODUCTION OF TERT-AMYLBENZENE

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance useful as a synthetic raw material or solvent in high purity and yield, by reacting isoamylene with benzene in the presence of a catalyst composed of sulfuric acid and aluminum halide at a specific molar ratio. CONSTITUTION:The titled substance can be produced by reacting isoamylene with benzene at -20-+5 deg.C in the presence of a catalyst containing sulfuric acid and an aluminum halide (preferably aluminum chloride) at a molar ratio of 1.5-3. The amount of sulfuric acid is 3-8wt% based on benzene. EFFECT:There is little production of sec-isoamylbenzene which has a boiling point close to that of the objective substance and is difficult to be separated by fractionation.
