PURPOSE:To enable a recorder to record reciprocatively in forward and backward directions with high printing quality, by completing switching of a taking-up direction of a multi-ink ribbon in response to a switching operation for the next line, and starting recording in the next line immediately after the completion of the switching. CONSTITUTION:When recording in a line is finished, a planetary gear clutch 30 is turned, whereby a carriage 3 is moved by a scanning distance corresponding to a rotating quantity of a gear 12 necessary for switching from one ribbon- driving shaft to the other driving shaft, while a thermal head 4 is maintained in a head-up state. When the clutch 30 is engaged with the ribbon-driving shaft for taking up a ribbon relatively to a recording direction, the thermal head 4 is turned down, and recording is started. The ribbon is taken up simultaneously with recording, so that reciprocative recording in forward and backward directions can be performed without generating wrinkling or skewing of a ribbon sheet, lowering of printing quality or the like due to a time gap between the start of take-up and the start of recording.
