A negative electrode for direct alcohol fuel cells comprising transition metal oxides is provided to improve the activity of a catalyst and the performance of direct alcohol fuel cells compared with conventional negative electrode for direct alcohol fuel cells using only a catalyst. A negative electrode for direct alcohol fuel cells comprises transition metal oxides. The alcohol is methanol or ethanol. The catalyst of the negative electrode is a platinum catalyst or a platinum/ruthenium alloy catalyst. The transition metal oxide is one or more mixture selected from oxides of transition metals selected from the group consisting of Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Te, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Cd, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, and Ir. |
