[Also in Divisions F2 and G5] In a device for transporting and sensing perforated tape, a capstan shaft 2 is adapted to be driven in either direction of rotation by ratchet mecha nism comprising a ratchet whee. secured to shaft 2 and having two sets of teeth 21, 21<SP>1</SP> arranged to be engaged respectively by pawls 27, 27<SP>1</SP> attached to armatures 25, 25<SP>1</SP> associated with solenoids 23, 23<SP>1</SP>. Each armature 25 25<SP>1</SP> carries a pawl depressor 28, 28<SP>1</SP> which is adapted to hold the non- operative pawl 27<SP>1</SP>, 27 out of engagement with its ratchet teeth 21<SP>1</SP>, 21, respectively. A spring 26 is attached to the upper end of each armature and a non-conducting strip 36 is engaged by the lower end of each armature, movement of the strip 36 serving to break switch contacts 35. On energization of solenoid 23<SP>1</SP>, armature 25<SP>1</SP> pivots in an anticlockwise direction whereby pawl 27<SP>1</SP> is moved to engage the next adjacent tooth 21<SP>1</SP>, and strip 36 is moved in the direction of arrow B to break contacts 35 and de-energize solenoid 23<SP>1</SP>. Under the influence of spring 26, the armature 25<SP>1</SP> moves back to its original position, thereby causing output shaft 2 to move one step in the clockwise direction, and causing movement of strip 36 towards the left so that switch contacts 35 again touch each other for the initiation of a new cycle. Energization of solenoid 23 effects anticlockwise movement of output shaft 2. |
