A compressed reticulated polyurethane foam is prepared by reticulating the foam by igniting a combustible mixture of an oxidizable gas and an oxidizing gas in the pores of the foam, the oxidizable: oxodizing gas molar ratio being less than the stoichiometric ratio, and then compressing the reticulated foam. The oxidizing gas is suitably oxygen or oxygenated air and the oxidizable gas is suitably hydrogen, coal gas, natural gas or a C 1 to C 5 alkane. In a specific example a polyester urethane foam was reticulated in a combustion chamber using a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen in a molar ratio of 1À5 : 1, and the reticulated foam was compressed between heated nip rollers. |
