Lubricating oil additives are prepared by reacting at elevated temperature a 1,2-dithiole-3-thione having at least 30 carbon atoms and containing at least one substituent group containing 27 to 300 carbon atoms and preferably derived from a polyolefin, with an alkylene polyamine having at least one primary amino group and one secondary amino group separated from the primary amino group by 2 or 3 carbon atoms, the polyamine being present in at least equimolar proportion. The polyolefin may be a polymer of isobutylene, ethylene, propylene or butene-1. The polyamine may be an alkylene diamine, polyalkylene polyamine or an N-alkyl alkylene diamine or N-alkyl polyalkylene polyamine, many examples of which are specified. The reaction may be effected in an inert solvent. In examples: (A) a polyisobutylene substituted trithione is prepared by reacting polyisobutylene with sulphur and 4-neopentyl-5-t.-butyl-1,2-dithiole-3-thione, and polyisobutylene substituted trithiones are reacted with ethylene diamine and mixtures of polyalkylene polyamines of average compositions, tetraethylene pentamine and triethylene tetramine.ALSO:Lubricating compositions comprise a mineral or synthetic lubricating oil and a detergent/dispersant additive prepared by reacting at elevated temperature a 1,2-dithiole-3-thione having at least-30 carbon atoms and containing at least one substituent group containing 27 to 300 carbon atoms and preferably derived from an olefin polymer, with at least one alkylene polyamine containing at least one primary amino group and one secondary amino group separated from the primary amino group by 2 or 3 carbon atoms. The polymer may be a polymer of isobutylene, ethylene, propylene or butene-1. The polyamine may be an alkylene diamine or polyalkylene polyamine, or an N-alkyl substitution derivative thereof, many suitable amines being listed. The oil may be a paraffinic, naphthenic, asphaltic or mixed hydrocarbon oil; a polyolefin, alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon, polyethylene oxide, aromatic ether; or a phosphate, carboxylate or silicon-containing ester. The compositions may also contain pour point depressants, oiliness agents, antioxidants, rust and corrosion inhibitors and other detergents, particularly metal dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioates and trialkyl or polyethylenoxy dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioates. Examples describe compositions comprising mineral lubricating oils, reaction products of polyisobutylene-substituted trithiones and ethylene diamine or mixtures of polyalkylene polyamines of average compositions tetraethylene pentamine and triethylene tetramine, and zinc dialkylphenyl dithiophosphate in which the alkyl groups are derived from polypropylene and contain 12 to 15 carbon atoms. |
