Pyridine and 3-methyl pyridines are produced by reacting acrolein with ammonia in the vapour phase at an elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst comprising a zeolitic molecular sieve which is defined as a natural or synthetic zeolite having a hydrated aluminosilicate structure and containing a cation or cations to balance the negative charge of the structure. It is preferred to use a catalyst which is at least partially protonated, for example as obtained by treating a zeolitic molecular sieve containing lanthanide ions with an aqueous solution of an ammonium salt and which may be subsequently heated. The catalyst may be used as a static or fluidized bed. Preferably the process is carried out in the presence of oxygen and optionally in the presence of a diluent gas. |
