The leading article engages a reciprocating stop 3 which at this stage is moving in the direction of conveyance at a speed slightly less than a speed V corresponding to the output capacity of the packaging machine. The trailing article of the group (i.e. the smaller group to be fed to the packaging machine) is engaged by grippers 2 moving at the same speed as the stop 3. By this means each smaller group is separated from the incoming larger group and is fed to a position in which the articles of the smaller group are engaged between one of a series of grippers 6 on an endless chain 14 and a co-operating endless belt 8. These are travelling at the same speed as the speed of the stop 3. A stop 9 on an endless chain 10 moving at a speed slightly greater than V then picks up the trailing article of the group and accelerates the group away to the packaging machine. A similar modification (Fig. 2, not shown), is also described.
