Methacrylic acid can be prepared by a novel process comprising heating alpha -hydroxyisobutyric acid in the presence of a compound of basic reaction at a temperature of about 160 DEG to 340 DEG C. in a reaction medium comprising an inert polar liquid having a boiling point above 200 DEG C.
