1,215,210. Unsaturated carboxylic esters. NATIONAL DISTILLERS & CHEMICAL CORP. 30 Dec., 1968 [28 Dec., 1967; 21 Aug. 1968], No. 61743/68. Heading C2C. An olefinically unsaturated ester is prepared by reacting an olefinically unsaturated compound, a carboxylic acid and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst containing palladium metal and platinum metal and activated with at least one alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide or organic acid salt or inorganic acid salt. The catalyst is preferably a Pd/Pt alloy containing up to 2À5% by weight of Pt based on the weight of Pd activated with sodium acetate and may be supported on an inert carrier such as alumina. The reaction is preferably conducted in the vapour phase. In the examples ethylene and acetic acid are reacted to yield vinyl acetate. |
