PURPOSE:To obtain ultrafine high-purity zirconia-alumina based slurry having <=0.5mum particle diameter in a large amount at a low cost, by dissolving or suspending an Al salt or hydrated alumina in an aqueous solution of zirconium oxychloride, blending a substance capable of generating NH3 and reacting the resultant blend at a given temperature under pressure. CONSTITUTION:An Al salt or hydrated alumina is dissolved or suspended in an aqueous solution containing zirconium oxychloride or further added metal salt, e.g. Y metal salt, as a stabilizer. Urea or a substance capable of generating NH3 by hydrolysis, e.g. hexamethylenediamine, is blended with the above- mentioned solution is suspension. The resultant blend is further reacted under condition of 140-300 deg.C and 4-150kg/cm<2> pressure in an autoclave to afford the aimed ultrafine zirconia-alumina powder slurry. The slurry is dehydrated, dried, calcined and disintegrated to provide ultrafine zirconia-alumina based powder.
