PURPOSE: To achieve good yields, totally uniform saturation of preforms, and high fiber-to-resin ratios by utilizing staged pressurization to a rigid mold and a deformable mold and by removing excess resin. CONSTITUTION: The pressure differential between a first pressure P1 in a pressure chamber 38 exerted through a bladder/liner 36 and the pressure in the space 52 exerted by the injection resin is of magnitude to bias conformable cauls 32 away from corresponding surface 16 of the rigid female mold 14, thereby causing the space 52 to expand beyond its net dimensions, facilitating resin flow throughout the fiber reinforcement layer, which ensures complete saturation of the fiber reinforcement layer. The pressure is raised to a second predetermined pressure P2 , the pressure transferred through the bladder/liner 36 uniformly biases the conformable cauls 32 and restores it to the net dimensions of the composite product, and expels excess resin through a vent path 28 with the uniform biasing action exerted by the conformable cauls 32. This provides complete swoller fiber and increase the fiber-to-resin ratio of the resin- impregnated fiber reinforcement layer. |
