On embodiment of a snap hook (1000) has an eyelet (205), a hook (300) having a shank (350) leading to a curved section (400) that terminates in a receiving end (420), and a hinged gate (500) having a long arm (2540) and a short arm (2560), each arm terminating in a stem element (2840, 2860). The receiving end (420) has a notch (430) on a lip (425) of an inside surface of the receiving end. A metal wire gate (2500) extends from a supporting portion (210) located on the eyelet and is biased closed against the notch. The gate is bowed to conform to the shape of the snap hook. When opened, the gate straddles either side of the shank so as to maximize the size of the aperture (290). In an additional embodiment (8000), the gate (8010) is constructed of plastic material and includes a mounting structure (8012) that can be assembled onto the S-shaped hook (8002).
