The cooler has a unit with two opposing walls, and has at least one group of pipes which run horizontally between them in rows which are arranged one above another. The pipes have upwards-pointing rounded surfaces or edges which are offset on successive rows, and which align on lines (24,25) which are inclined to the vertical. The pipes are connected to a supply device on one wall, and a discharge device on the opposite wall. Instead of having side walls, the unit has metal side sheets (32) which extend over the entire length between the walls, on the rounded surfaces or edges of the tops (23) or outer sides (31) of the laterally external pipes. The sheets extend the inclined lines of alignment outwards, or are parallel to these lines, and have a height which is 1.2 to 5 times the average spacing (b) of the pipes along the lines.
