The arrangement has a round, rod-shaped recording medium (12) with a repeating scale signal recorded over its entire outer surface area, and with an origin signal of a larger wavelength, recorded on part of the outer extent. A scale signal detection head (35a) and an origin signal detection head (35b) move relative to the longitudinal direction of the recording medium, while keeping a respective, predetermined distance to it. The arrangement includes a round, rod-shaped recording medium with a scale signal of a predetermined recording wavelength, recorded over the entire outer surface area of the recording medium, and repeated successively in longitudinal direction, and with an origin signal of a larger wavelength, recorded on part of the outer extent, at least at one position in longitudinal direction. A scale signal detection head (35a) and an origin signal detection head can be moved relative to the longitudinal direction of the recording medium, while keeping a respective, predetermined distance to the outer extent of the recording medium. The distance of the origin signal detection head is larger than that of the scale signal detection head. The scale signal detection head lies at a position which is not opposite the origin signal, and the origin signal detection head lies at a position which is opposite the origin signal.
