PURPOSE:To improve the external emitting efficiency and the current using efficiency by preventing the absorption of a light generated from a light emitting region to an opaque layer or an opaque board and contributing to the external emission of the light directed obliquely from the emitting region. CONSTITUTION:Clad layers 15, 17 (transparent layers), and totally reflecting layers 14, 18 having smaller refractive indexes than those of the layers 15, 17 are formed among a board 10, a buffer layer 11 and a contact layer 21 (opaque layer). A light generated from the layer 16 includes, in addition to light rays (a) directly reaching the side, light rays (b), (c) directed to upward and downward and to an element side face upon reflecting on the layers 14, 18 to be emitted externally from the sides of the layers 15, 17, thereby enhancing the external emitting efficiency. Since this LED has much light output quantity from the element side, its productivity can be enhanced by horizontally mounting it on a printed board. |
