<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an agent for suppressing the rise of blood sugar level and derived from a safety food material, a method for producing the agent and a composition containing the agent. <P>SOLUTION: The invention provides an agent for suppressing the rise of blood sugar level containing the extract of dried beefsteak plant (Perilla frutescens) with an ethanol aqueous solution having a concentration of 90-99.9 vol.%, as an active component, and a composition containing the agent and effective for the prevention and/or improvement and treatment of diabetes and the rise of blood sugar level after eating.
