A spout 26 having a flange portion 28 and a neck portion 30 is secured to film 18 by supporting a sheet of film 18, positioning the spout 26 proximate an annularly rigidly supported portion of the film 18, forcing the neck 30 through the film 18 in the zone formed by the annular support, advancing the spout 26 through the pierced portion of the film 18 until the flange 28 contacts the film 18, and securing the flange 28 to the film 18. As shown, the film 18 is supported, preferably on a rubber cushion 16, on one end 14 of a member 10 provided with a cavity 12 in which reciprocates a ram 20 having a hollow 27 therein. The spout 16 is supported, preferably on a rubber cushion 24, on the ram 20 and enters the cavity 12 through an opening 32. A ram 15 is reciprocatably mounted in a bore 13 of a member 11 and has a cavity 17 in which a spring-loaded plunger 21 is slidably mounted. In operation, the film 18 and the spout 26 are positioned as shown. The ram 15 descends to clamp the film 18 against the member 10. The ram 20 moves upwardly to cause the neck 30 to pierce a hole in the film 18 and punch a piece (19), Fig. 2 (not shown), therefrom. The neck 30 continues its upward movement and causes the plunger 21 to ascend until the flange 28 abuts the underside of the film. An electrical impulse heating element 23, preferably comprising a thin circular ring of resistance wire insulated from the ram 15 and covered by a non-stick membrane, then heat seals the flange 28 to the film 18. The seal is cooled momentarily under continued clamping pressure. The ram 15 is elevated and the punched-out piece (19) is drawn downwardly by suction through the spout 26 and the hollow 27, Fig. 3 (not shown). In modifications (not shown), (a) the sealing element 23 is positioned in the lower ram, (b) the member 14 is not provided with the opening 32 and the spout 26 is inserted into. the cavity 12 before positioning the film 18 thereover, (c) if the neck 30 is of small diameter the spout is forced through the film 18 without detaching a scrap of film and the plunger 20 and the hollow 27 in the ram 20 are omitted, or (d) the spout 26 is attached to the film 18 by an adhesive instead of heat sealing. The spout 26 and the film 18 may be made of polyethylene or copolymers thereof, polypropylene, copolymers of ethylene and propylene, rubber or metal. |
