1,241,859. Cutting apparatus; planing non- metallic sheet material. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 16 Dec., 1969 [30 Dec., 1968], No. 61686/68. Headings B4B and B5K. A cutting apparatus for use in a butt splicing machine comprising two heatable cutters 13 mounted on a support member 1 such that they are movable relative to one another. The cutters 13 which may be in the form of knives or razor blades, are mounted on rods 10 which are rotatably mounted in members 2, 3. The rods are provided with stems 20 for co-operation with adjusting screws 17 so that by rotation of a screw against the action of a spring 14 the angular position of the cutter may be varied. The member 2 is fixedly secured to the support 1 while the member 3 is slidably relative thereto in order that the spacing between the blades can be adjusted by means of a screw 7 and springs 6. As shown in Fig. 3, the cutting apparatus is mounted on a guide bar 26 in a butt-splicing machine so as to be movable past the ends 34, 34a of a rubber inner tube held by clamps 31, 31a. The cutters are supported at the end of their stroke in order to prevent irregularities in the cut by means of a pair of heads 37, 38 mounted on a rod 41 which is slidable, against the action of a spring (44, Fig. 4), in a tube 36 connected to the guide bar 26 by a rod 35. The spacing apart of the heads may be adjusted by means of a screw-and-spring means (42, 43, Fig. 5). |
