[Also in Divisions B8 and D1] In order to maintain a supply of bristles at a narrow outlet, as required by the operation of a conventional picker 1, without repeatedly having manually to re-fill a bristle magazine, the bristles are conveyed from the base of a magazine 10, of greatly increased capacity, along an, at least partially, curved channel, by feed pins 26-27, (67) or 152. The pins 26-27 are moved through the unrelieved mass of bristles 17, by their rigid connections with endless drive chains 20-21 and are spaced apart, so as to pass on either side of picker 1. A series of single pins (67) or 152 can be operated pneumatically or hydraulically so that no pin fouls the picker 1. The extent to which pins 152 project from continuously rotating disc 148 is determined by the engagement of follower rolls 154 with stationary edge cams 159, 161. An instantaneous radial retraction of each pin is effected, by the operation of a pneumatic ram 167, which is initiated by roller pivot 155 tripping a valve. Disc 148 is driven at constant torque by means of a friction clutch. As a pin 152 leaves the magazine, its pivot 155 operates pneumatic ram 139, to retract cut-off blades 133, 135, and allow the bristles 17 to drop on to the edge of disc 148. The next pin 152 then has time to re-actuate ram 139, to return the apparatus to the position shown, before entering the magazine. Pneumatic ram 145 is also actuated, to lift the blade 135 and provide a space for the passage of the tip of the pin 152 between the edges of blades 133. In a modification (Fig. 10, not shown), adjacent delivery channels have flexible end portions, so that the outlet of either can be brought into the range of movement of a single picker 1. |
