Electrically conductive zinc oxide is prepared by subjecting ZnO to an organic siloxane compound, consisting of a silane derivative having at least one organic radical per molecule attached to silicon by a Si-C bond and at least one Si-O bond per molecule, at a temperature of about 400 DEG to 650 DEG C. in the absence of oxidizing gases, the amount of siloxane compound not exceeding 10% by weight of the zinc oxide. The siloxane may be brought into contact with the ZnO in admixture with a non-oxidizing gas. The siloxane preferably contains at least one lower alkyl group (containing up to 3 carbon atoms) attached to silicon by a Si-C bond. Siloxanes that are applicable are (MeHSiO)x, where x is 3 to 6; MenSi(OEt)4- n where n is 1 to 3 and (MenH3- nSi)2O wherein n is 1 to 3. A preferred siloxane is trimethylethoxysilane. |
