A keyboard mechanism for a powered typewriter or similar office machine has intermediate linkages (e.g. 19) operated by key levers against spring action, for intermediate storage and release for the keyed-in functions. These linkages have locking surfaces for plunging into a ball lock. An inertia mass (34) which acts against spring force (22) and delays the fall of the intermediate linkage (19) into the ball lock (29). Can be adjusted by a control lever (47) and cam piece (43) for a reduced or ineffective delay action. The inertia mass has a stop arm which swings about a horizontal axis (31). A projection on the stop arm interacts actively with the cam piece (43) which is rotated by the lockable adjusting lever (47).
