PURPOSE:To enable the continuous production of alcohol preventing the proliferation of sundry germs, without using sterilization process, by adjusting the pH of the substrate to alkaline state in the continuous production of alcohol by fermentation process. CONSTITUTION:A fibrous material such as synthetic fiber, nonwoven cloth, glass wool, etc., or a porous material 4 such as charcoal, brick, etc., is filled in a porous column 3 such as ceramic column, and microorganisms capable of producing alcohol, e.g. bacteria belonging to Zymomonas genus or yeasts belonging to Saccharomyces genus are immobilized in the column. A substrate adjusted to 11-14pH, i.e. the medium for fermentation is introduced continuously into the column to effect the continuous production of alcohol. |
