The invention relates to a process and a device for compression moulding foam blanks which are inserted into metal mould cavities and, after the latter are closed, are heated to a temperature sufficient for permanent deformation of the foam, in particular approximately 120 to 200@C, by contact heat of readily heat-conducting metal plates designed with chambers, bearing against the mould cavities, specifically in such a manner that, during the heating phase, steam is introduced into the chamber from one side from above and, at the opposite side at the bottom, is removed again together with the condensate; during the cooling phase, cooling water is fed and removed in the opposite direction to the steam and the condensate, at the same regions of the chamber plates, the chambers being filled with cooling water and, after the cooling, the chamber is blown out with compressed air fed in the upper region, analogously to the steam feed and the cooling water is removed from the lowermost region in the reverse direction.
